Golf by Kids is a group of kids running their own junior golf tournaments to give other kids an opportunity to learn about competitive junior golf and to raise money for charities of interest to them.
The concept is simple but powerful with just seven basic steps:
1. The first step is to pick a friendly local golf course that will cooperate and charge a reasonable kids tournament green fee
2. Next the kids select a charity that will receive the money made on the tournament
3. Step three is to contact the charity to let them know about the tournament and ask for permission to use their logo for marketing
4. Once permission is granted they create a flyer with the logo and start to tell other kids about their upcoming tournament
5. Before tournament day, the kids solicit local businesses for prizes to award at the tournament
6. Now its time to run the tournament with scoreboards, scorecards, ect and have fun. Be sure to leave the golf course in better shape so you will be invited back again
7. After the tournament is over the kids add up all the entry fees and make a donation to the designated charity
One idea that we came up that you might try in your own events is giving any kid that shoots a new personal best score a $10 ice cream gift card.
This is a very powerful educational model not just because the kids give other kids the opportunity to play competitive golf but because the kids are learning how to run what is essentially a small business enterprise. And by doing so the kids make invaluable lifetime contacts with other kids, adults and organizations in their community as they work to give back by raising money for worthy charities.
The kids that pursue this model become more confident and better communicators. They feel terrific about themselves for what they are accomplishing and develop strong organizing skills. They don't have to be great golfers themselves but inevitably develop a stronger interest in the game of golf which will benefit them for their entire lives.
